There’s a lot to like about RemoteRebootX: it is free, it does not have to be installed, it features a user friendly interface, and it lets you do a lot of things remotely. With RemoteRebootX, you can perform these actions remotely: shut down, reboot, wake on LAN, get MAC address, and more.

To get started with RemoteRebootX, you will have to download a 143KB archive, extract its contents, and then run the RemoteRebootX executable. That is all you have to do – you do not have to go through any setup or installation procedure. Just run an executable and you’re ready to go.

The main part of the interface is taken up by a list of all the hosts you added or imported from a file. At the top there’s a traditional File Menu and a toolbar with buttons for various functions the application can perform. Overall, the interface is very simple to figure out – and to help you figure things out as rapidly as possible, a Getting Started prompt with useful information is presented when you launch RemoteRebootX.

From a functionality point of view, RemoteRebootX allows you to perform the following actions: remotely reboot a machine, remotely shut it down, start and stop pinging, create a remote desktop connection, get last boot time, get available disk space, get MAC address, schedule tasks, wake on LAN, get a list of services that are not currently running. All this functionality is provided to you for the great price of free.

Please note that you should not share a .rxx file that contains passwords with someone who should not have access to them. Developer Cocobolo Software explains:
“If you save the state of a Remote Reboot X grid with passwords stored in it, they will be encrypted in the .rrx state file. However, it is important to understand that these passwords are stored in clear text in RAM, so you must not share a .rrx file containing passwords with someone who shouldn’t know those passwords.”

If you want a simple, free, and efficient tool to remotely perform actions on another machine, go get RemoteRebootX.

Pros

RemoteRebootX does not have to be installed. The interface is incredibly easy to use. Remotely shut down, remotely reboot, and remotely perform other actions. RemoteRebootX is a free application.

Cons

Be careful when sharing a .rxx file.
